About the Show:
In her debut solo show Tuning Stars Within, Amy Erickson presents an intricate, sharp-edged world that threads together themes of intimacy, reflection, and change. The month-long exhibition brings together three parallel bodies of work ranging from the artist’s perceptual sketches and studio experiments to her conceptually complex medium to large scale figure paintings. Her integration of perceptual painting and compositional invention attempt to dislodge assumptions about what we see and how we experience reality.
Erickson creates paintings, drawings, and collages from direct observation and imagination. Her imagery includes portraits of close friends, personal effects, and private spaces, offering an intimate glimpse into a reality which is symbolically curated and sensitively perceived. Through her prismatic color blocks and densely painted surfaces, her subjects appear both visceral and sublime. Erickson combines influences from the lineage of perceptual painters—including Morandi, Edwin Dickinson, Euan Uglow – and constructs visual narratives with abstract masses of color and value, revealing an ineffable, emotive quality of a place, person, or thing.
Erickson earned a BFA in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and has trained in painting and figure drawing at Gage Academy of Art (Trowbridge Atelier, 2020; Flack Atelier, 2019). Amy has exhibited in many cities across the US, including Seattle and New York. Erickson is a teaching artist with the Modern Color Atelier at Gage Academy of Art. She lives and works in Seattle.
About the Gallery:
Great figurative (and, more broadly, representational) artists are emerging from atelier training with technical brilliance and fresh vision; they constitute a global, grassroots resurgence in the figurative arts. The mission of the Figure Ground Art Gallery is to support them, to help bring about a flourishing art culture in our time. We offer monthly, rotating shows from our upstairs space in Pioneer Square. We are a for-profit business entity that is volunteer run.
