Often Thinks of Rome
Paul Rutz Solo Show
First Thursday Art Walk Opening:
April 4th, 5-9PM
On view by appointment in April
From the Artist:
This show’s title comes from a meme that cruised through social media last year: women asking the men in their lives how often they think of the Roman Empire. The videos are funny, women astonished that Rome crosses many men’s minds many times a week.
When I saw this, I thought, “Holy shit, I’m a cliché.”
I think of myself as a liberal, a feminist, a man tuned into the interests of the feminine. And yet: I’ve been making portraits of my family and friends as Roman gods for several years.
I believe Rome still pulses through the whole Western world, and it’s a particularly good lens through which to picture what we find sacred or special: our Senate, big concrete arches, and Venus leg razors.
